Material Culture Career Paths: Marcus Harshaw

Marcus Harshaw is a dynamic, enthusiastic and impassioned guest fanatic who leads museum experiences and strategic program development! As Carnegie Science Center’s Senior Director of Museum Experiences, he oversees all on-site experiences including exhibits, gallery experiences including USS Requin and the historic Miniature Railroad & Village®, and theater experiences including the Buhl Planetarium and The Rangos Giant Cinema.

Prior to joining the Science Center team, Marcus had been a fixture in Midwest museums in Indianapolis and Cincinnati in increasingly responsible roles focusing on education, evaluation, exhibits, and featured experiences. Before coming to CSC, he was Vice President of Learning & Exhibits with Kaleideum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. There he oversaw several frontline departments for both Kaleideum campuses which consisted of a children’s museum and a science center. He successfully merged two separate programming, exhibits, and facilities departments across two campuses into one unified, collaborative team while planning a new $30.5 million new museum building to replace the two existing structures.

Harshaw earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in the Early American Republic from Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Kentucky with a minor in Ancient Civilizations, and a Master of Arts degree in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University where he now serves as an award-winning lecturer teaching museum education.
